The Cyplon Nile Experience

The Philae Cruiser

We recently travelled to Egypt with Cyplon Holidays to experience their luxury Nile cruise offering, and it would be fair to say the Philae, the ship we travelled on and Oberoi’s newest Nile cruiser, far exceeded our expectations.

We found out towards the end of our time on board that not only does it have 20 cabins, with about four staff to each cabin, but it also has two suites, one with a private deck and private heated whirlpool! The cabins come in either single or double, are all en suite and are beautifully decorated in dark wood and Egyptian themed, luxurious furnishings. The lower deck has a fully equipped dining room and kitchen, serving up food that any good restaurant would be proud of and the main deck has a cocktail bar, cigar lounge and library, for when you just have to get away from it all. While the upper decks are largely devoted to the cabins and suites, but also feature a fitness centre and two treatment rooms in case you’re not relaxed enough.

The sun deck has its own swimming pool, so you can be doing lengths while you cruise down the Nile, which just blew my mind. Or if you’re not so energetic you can just sit and relax in the shallower sides of the pool in the sun. There is also ample space for lounging around the pool and at the other end of the deck a shaded bar/buffet/chef’s station and space for all the guests to sit and eat together or separately. All dining, including breakfast is a la carte and of a very high standard.

The staff all speak excellent English and are fully restaurant trained. We had nothing but the most warm and welcoming service the entire time we were on board. We have to give special mention to Nasser who did the most wonderful job of ensuring we had all the food and drink we could possibly want at all times, and Ellia who worked his magic each evening with our new towels to surprise us with some sort of animal or other creation on our bed. He even borrowed items of clothing and sunglasses we’d left lying around to give them amusing touches, like the elephant we came back to one evening who was wearing my sunglasses.

Needless to say, these are just two examples of people who made the whole experience very special. The entire staff, top to bottom, bent over backwards to attend to our every need, often going far beyond what we’d asked, really demonstrating that famous Arabic hospitality.

Also included in the experience is the service of an English speaking Egyptologist for all site visits and based on our guide, Tarek*, we couldn’t have asked for anyone who knew more about the sites we were visiting, or spoke better English. Not only was he a joy to spend the day with, he was also capable of reading the hieroglyphs directly from the walls – no mean feat!

We flew internationally and internally with EgyptAir and were lucky enough to be upgraded to business class on our Heathrow – Luxor flight, which was a great experience. The food was very pleasant and, as with everywhere else on the trip, the service was excellent on all flights.

After our five days cruising the Nile from Luxor to Aswan, we flew from Aswan to Cairo and spent two days in a five star hotel on Gezira Island. From there we visited the Pyramids and Sphynx at Giza and the world famous Cairo Museum, complete with the entire Tutankhamun treasure trove. We could easily have spent an entire week in the Cairo Museum it’s that big and full of the most incredible ancient treasures.

Egypt surpassed all our expectations. Whether it was tasting the delicious food, dining in an incredible salon hidden away within a hotel or just cruising down the Nile while the sun set behind us it was all amazing.
