As a self-confessed crazy cat lady you can imagine my excitement when my friend told me she was taking me for my birthday to the Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium for a night of yoga and cat cuddles.
The cat café opened in Shoreditch last year and is the latest animal inspired craze to hit London, inspired by the Japanese, who opened the first one in Osaka ten years ago. Home to 13 cats, the cafe is a mecca for cat lovers to come and spend some quality time with them whilst enjoying delicious cake, or even give the new yoga classes a go.
We arrived on a Wednesday evening excited by the prospect of spending the next hour practising yoga surrounded by our feline friends. As soon as we started breathing deeply and stretching, the cats seemed to wake up from their afternoon of snoozing and began inquisitively pottering around the room and wrapping themselves around our feet.
I would love to lie and say I kept my mind focused on the yoga, but most of the class was spent bending over mid-pose to stroke a cat as it flitted past, looking disdainfully up at us as we struggled to keep balance.
I really enjoyed the class, despite a rather off-putting smell wafting round the room, deposited in one of the litter trays, by one of he cats, before he slunk off back up stairs. Even the yoga teacher and our intense mindfulness couldn’t stop the fits of giggles at that point!
Yoga was followed by some delicious herbal tea and selection of tasty cakes as well as more time to play with the cats. We eventually dragged ourselves away, but it took a lot of will power to not slip one of the kittens into my bag.
The cat café is the perfect solution for animal-deprived people living in London who are in need of some after-work kitty-therapy!
